The minds behind Universal Parks & Resorts’ attractions are looking to merge the theme park ride with video games — possibly with a Harry Potter theme. At least that’s what a patent dubbed Video Game Ride from NBCUniversal subsidiary Universal City Studios LLC is trying to do.

Specifically, the patent is aimed at creating a vehicle "configured to receive respective inputs from one or more riders via the vehicle interface circuitry, and wherein the respective inputs are related to one or more game features of a game environment; and a game controller configured to receive information from the vehicle interface circuitry related to the respective inputs; and provide instructions to modify the game environment based on at least one of the respective inputs.”

The patent uses the example of a "wizard-themed game" that could have riders use different wands associated with characters and use those wands at specific moments to score points, competing with opposing teams or to accomplish a joint goal. "In certain embodiments, the score input may include input from external sensors that capture player motion, such as wand motion, and provide the motion characteristics as input to a score determination algorithm. If the wand motion is associated with a particular spell that is an effective spell for the game, the player's score may be updated to indicate a successful 'freezing spell' or other spell has been cast," said the patent.

This sounds suspiciously like the lame "TSMM with wands" pitch that made J.K. Rowling drop Disney.

This is a poor and dismissive attitude.

Sure, I probably could have worded it better. But Dragon Challenge is something you find at a Six Flags. I don't believe it is theme park level quality.

I always thought it was her demand for complete creative control that made Disney say "bye"

This might be too early in the ballgame for that tech to go into that spot. I would think it would be more possible for the third park. That might take a bit of time to put it together.

I thought that it was more compared to Buzz with Wands and not TSM?

Edited it for a reason, as if Thrill Coasters exist for the theme parks, Go big on the theming (Much like Taron and Black Mamba).

I doubt the patent is for HP, it sounds perfectly suitable for Nintendo. Remember, patents are purposely misleading, revealing just enough to allow for a lawsuit, but not even close to actual plans. If Uni gave wands/HP as an example in the patent, you can be rest assured that's not it.

IMO, this is far more revealing (assuming the concept even sees the light of day):
"There’s no clear indication on what theme this technology is meant for, but the patent states the players would be able to make decisions in the ride that alter the course of the experience, as well as make those decisions via controllers guests may use that could come in the shape of joysticks, steering wheels, custom weapons..."
Can you say: "Mario Kart"?

It was definitely TSMM. I just searched for and found the post over on Magic. A magical creatures petting zoo was also pitched apparently.

So glad the rights went to Universal instead.

You might be on to something. Would this mean anything for physical sets though? Because that's one of the things rumored heavily for Nintendo.

How would you envision a physical set Mario Kart attraction? I don't think being "interactive" would change that, at least from what I'm envisioning.

I know quite a bit and this was not anything planned for a Nintendo attraction that I know.

I have not heard anything about the use of this patent and it could very well become an attraction but I want to remind everyone that companies patent and trademark A LOT of things that they never use. Look at Apple patents as an example or the X-Wing coaster Disney patented. Temper expectations.
